The traditional practice in assured rainfall ( more than 750 mm) zones with deep Vertisols in India is to fallow to land in the rainy season and grow crops like sorghum, chickpea, and wheat only in the post-rainy season on residual moisture. The extent of such rainy season fallowing, not precisely known, is estimated at 5-12 Mha. Results of research atICRISAT Center reported in 1982 suggest various technology options which would produce crops during ER -
