N2  - A field experiment was designed to determine the effect of wheat stubble on the transformations and balance of fertilizer nitrogen applied to a vertisol (Norillee series) early in the summer fallow. 15N-labelled ammonium sulphate andcalcium nitrate were applied at a rate equivalent to 100 kg N ha-1 to the surface 10 cm of soil in confined microplots on 5 February 1978. Stubble was incorporated at rates equivalent to 0, 4 and 32 t ha-1. The cores were removed from the field 15 weeks later, the soil was sampled to 120 cm and anayses for total N, mineral N and 15N were performed. Results indicated that an initial application of stubble reduced the total 15N
