N2  - Any programme of research, whether conducted in the experiment station or in farmers' fields, needs to monitor farmers' practices and fields continuously in the target research area. Monitoring is a means of updating research priorities, including those related to the long-term sustainability of cropping systems, and of documenting farmers' adoption of technologies developed through research. This paper describes the information that can be derived from continuous monitoring surveys, gives examples of how that information can be used in research systems to improve the efficiency of research, and discusses the resources required to conduct monitoring surveys and some methodological issues involved in their implementation
