Subject(s): Summary: The integration of geographic systems (GIS) and crop simulation models can allow more effective evaluation of promising technologies over spatial and time scales. The present study involved integrated use of ArcView GIS (gridded surfaces) and DSSAT-compatible crop models (sequence simulations) via software development at Texas A&M Research Center. Prior to application, interpolation techniques were evaluated for creating spatial input in the form of gridded climate surface. The performance of low-input maize cropping in western Mexico is simulated as a first application of the software. Preliminary results match expectations of Mexican agronomist and point up challenges for future applications of this approach.
