Integrated nutrient management strategies for soil fertility improvement and Striga control in Northern Ethiopia

The field trials consisted of a factorial combination of four rates of inorganic fertilizer N (0, 40, 80 and 120 kg N ha-1) and four rates of farmyard manure (0, 10, 20 and 30 t ha-1) in a split plot and randomized complete block designs. There were significant nitrogen and manure effects on Striga emergence. The most significant decrease in Striga density was at 120 kg N ha-1, while combined application of 40 kg N ha-1 and 30 t ha-1 manure reduced infestation. Combined application of manure and N (40 kg N ha-1 and 30 t ha-1 for sorghum and 80 kg N ha-1 and 30 t ha-1 manure for maize) increased crop yields at Sirinka during the second season. Addition of N through inorganic and organic sources is required for long term maintenance of cereal production and controlling Striga in northern Ethiopia.
