In the Mixteca Alta of Oaxaca, Mexico, and area characterized by severely depleted soils and low rainfall (450-550 mm), the Center for Development of Peasant Farmers (CEDICAM) seeks to increase soil fertility and reduce erosion. After six years of experiments with maize and bean rotations, yields have increased 100% and 65%, respectively, over first-year monoculture harvests. White clover and maize associations have also been successful, with the clover producing and abundant biomass (15-25 t/ha).
