Summary: The Ghana Grains Development project was established in 1979 to develop and extend technologies for increased maize and grain legume production. From 1977-79 to 1993-95 there has been a 50% increase in maize yield and over 200% increase in total production. This increase in production was a result of a strong institutional linkage between research and extension, farmer focused research, effective training of researchers and extensionists, and effective communication by extensionists to farmers. Numerous high yielding maize varieties were developed including those with high quality protein. No- tillage technologies were also developed which controlled weeds and erosion.
