Economic evaluation of farmer practices and recommendations for maize-based cropping systems in Batati, Tanzania after input liberalization

Summary: A participatory rural appraisal and literature review was done in 1995 to study the economics of farmer practices and recommendations for maize-based cropping systems in Babati after liberalization of input markets. The study shows that, use of chemical fertilizer together with kraal manure is the most profitable practice in zone II and III. For zone IV, application of kraal manure alone is the most profitable fertilizer practice for both sole maize and maize in association with pigeon pea cropping systems. Ox- ploughing is the most efficient method of land preparation and planting for all zones. Ox-weeding reduces labour required for weeding from 15 to 5 person days per ha for pure stand maize.
