Effect of stripe (yellow) rust on grain yield of bread wheat cv. Sardari in dryland areas of Iran

To assess the effect on grain yield of cv. Sardari, which is widely grown in dryland areas of the country, 214 farm fields comprising 5,150 ha in eight locations of Miyaneh were sprayed with Propiconazole and Tebuconazole at different growth stages. Statistical analyses showed significant differences for growth stages, fungicides and spray equipment. The mean grain yields of cv. Sardari were 2033 and 885 Kg ha-1 for sprayed and non-sprayed fields, respectively. Early spraying increased grain yield; rust levels in early sprayed fields reached 20S compared to 90 ? 100S in non-sprayed fields. Tebuconazole controlled stripe rust better than Propiconazole. Eight advanced bread wheat lines and two checks; Sardari and Azar 2, were also compared under natural infection. Line 7 (CIMMYT 82 - 126) produced the highest grain yield at 3812 kg ha-1compared to Sardari and Azar 2 at 1490 and 2419 kg ha-1, respectively. The stripe rust levels were Sardari (100S), Azar 2 (80MS) and CIMMYT 82 ? 126 (40R) in high rust locations. Overall, stripe rust decreased the grain yield of cv. Sardari by 55%-66%, and the use of resistant/tolerant cultivars and/or early sprays of fungicides are clearly important components of crop management practices to increase or stabilize wheat grain yields under stripe rust epidemic conditions.
