Abstract only

Productivity growth in agriculture is both a necessary and a sufficient condition for the development of the sector. This paper reviews recent literature on agricultural productivity in India and summarizes the results of total factor productivity (TFP) growth and its contribution to production growth over the past three decades. A methodological framework for computation of TFP and its growth is also presented. Crop-specific TFP growth for India is presented using more recent micro farm level data for the past three decades. This paper provides useful information to those interested in doing research on these issues. Some of the concerns raised in this paper on productivity provide direction for future research in this area.
