Cornmon bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) is an important food as well as cash crop. Most farri1ers use seed of their own bean varieties, which are low yielding. The private sector and the Malawi Crop Breeding Institute, together with CIAT, have developed several improved, high yielding bean varieties for specific production agro-ecologies (Tables 1 and 2).
