Peculiarities of the vegetation period in wheat

Summary: Vegetation period is considered as one of the most important factors in wheat breeding. Character of its heredity has been studied and domination of early maturity over the late one and occurrence of intermediate heredity were ascertained. Vegetation period is considered the number of days from the grain germination to its complete maturity. Phenological observations have enabled us to specify the duration of the vegetation period in hybrids and parent forms of winter cereal wheat on Mukhrani-Saguramo plain. Observations showed that the inheritance of number of days to maturity is manifested through domination of early or late maturing, as well as the similarity to the parental line in number of days to maturity. In cases of the large number of hybrid combinations intermediate heredity was recorded in 46,4% of progeny. The collected data proved that in case when one parental line of hybrid combination is early maturing production of early maturing hybrids is reasonably expected. In the hybrid combination Dolis Puri 35-4 X Sonora-64 the with number of days to maturity 230, while that of early maturing parent Dolis Puri 35-4 was 237 days. The cases when both parents were early and the hybrid was late were also identified. The combination Tbilisuri 5 X K-45406 required 233 days complete maturity, while the parents reached maturity in 230-231 days. Crossing of Tbilisuri 5 and Bezostaya 1 with foreign varieties produced comparatively early hybrids with the vegetation period 225-233 days to maturity.
