Abstract only
There are nine agricultural areas with varied soil and climatic conditions in Armenia. Winter wheat is cultivated in all these areas across almost the whole range of altitude starting from 650 and up to 2200 m above sea level under irrigated, dryland conditions and in the areas with sufficient rainfall. Proceeding from the above, wheat breeding is directed at the development of high-yielding and input-responsive varieties with good grain quality for all the country's areas. Related studies have been performed for years at the Mertsavan zonal experimental station of the Research Center of Agriculture and Plant Protection. The main method is hybridization -both simple and complex. To facilitate generation of variability and transfer to progeny of the most valuable traits and properties, a technique of induced mutagenesis is also employed. As a result of application of high breeding pressure to the segregating populations, a whole series of promising varieties and lines of winter bread wheat has been developed, a part of which was included in a competitive variety trial (19 varieties). Twelve varieties were submitted to the state testing system, 5 of which were released in various areas ofthe republic for cultivating both under irrigated and rain-fed conditions: Kangun 20 (1980), Arrnayanka 60 (1987), Akhtarnar (1994), Nairi 68 (2000) and Ani (2203). In the process of state testing are 7 more varieties (Lalvar, Sateni 22, Artsakh, Nairi 40, Victoria, Lalvar lO and Mertsavani 149). AII these varieties and lines exce11ed check variety Bezostaya 1: in yield -by 0.7-1.5 t/ha, in spike length -by 0.2-4.2 cm, in number of grains per spike -by 2-18 grains, in grain weight per spike -by 1.2-4.0 g, in 1000-grainweight-by9.2-22.1 g. According to crude protein content, new varieties equaled or exceeded standards by up to 2.1%. Similar figures were observed for protein content. Check variety Bezostaya 1 was characterized by the following values: yield- 4.2 t/ha, spike length - 7.5-7.8 cm, the number of grains per spike -36-38, grain weight per spike -1.1-1.3 g, 1000 grain-weight -38-40 g, crude protein content -27.4-28.7%, and protein content -10.7-11.4%. Thus, all varieties and lines of our breeding program have excelled standard variety Bezostaya 1 in yie1d and other important agronomic and quality traits. Their introduction into production under ap- propriate crop management practices can signifi- cantly increase grain production in the country.
