Summary: Alfalfa, Medicago sativa L., is an important forage plant for livestock and dairy production. An a:gronomically undesirable trade-off exists between yield, particularly in autumn, and winter hardiness. An understanding of the genetic control of plant growth and winter hardiness using a combination of quantitative genetics and linkage analysis could help improve both characters simultaneously (Brummer et al. 2000). The specific objective of this experiment was to determine the heritability and genetic correlations of winter injury and several morphological components assodated with autumn dormancy.
