Kernel opacity during development and moisture content within maize ears segregating for Opaque-2 and Floury-2

Identification of opaque-2 and floury-2 endosperm mutant classes by light transmission over a frosted glass was possible 25 days after pollination. Stages of kernel development and moisture content were factors found to be associated with identification of the two mutant classes. Ears segregating for these two mutants of several breeding lines showed differences in moisture content and kernel weight at post-physiological maturity. Mutant classes had a significantly greater moisture content and lower average kernel weight at harvest.
