A guide on the technological offer and correct use for climate smart and scale-appropriate mechanization solutions : technical catalogue and manual
Material type: TextLanguage: Spanish Series: INNOVATE – 3.5 Community of practice on Scale Appropriate MechanizationPublication details: Mexico : EiA : CIMMYT, 2023.Description: 224 pagesSubject(s): Summary: This book brings technical knowledge on existing and protypes of farm machinery for different field operations during the cropping cycle, enabling users to identify climate smart and scale-appropriate solutions, as well as ensure the correct use of the equipment in general. The book in this sense, serves it purpose a didactic material on the diversity of farm machinery within the cropping system context and facilitates learning on the practical implications and technical aspects of its use to different user including those who are not related to agricultural machinery to understand its role and importance. The book includes 8 chapters, Chapter 1 "Climate-smart machinery: a first approach" presents a preliminary definition for climate-smart machinery (CSM), what are the possible differentiators between conventional and CSM and present some examples from climate-smart machines around the world. Chapter 2 "Step-by-step mechanization in the agricultural production cycle" describes the machinery used in the stages of the cycle, especially in Conservation Agriculture systems, including in-field diagnosis, soil preparation in year zero, sowing, fertilization, pest control, harvest, and post-harvest. Chapter 3 "Tailor-made agricultural machinery design with a modular approach" describes the role of participatory methodologies in the development of agricultural implement prototypes, highlighting the Design Thinking approach, and presents the modular design and multiuse-multicrop approach. Chapter 4 "Context-flexible machinery at different scales of operation" presents a series of existing machines and developed prototypes of climate-smart solutions for different scales of operation during the production cycle. Chapter 5 "Coupling of agricultural machines" presents the importance of coupling and the necessary steps to achieve a correct connection between the power source and the agricultural implements, as well as the components and adjustments required to achieve a correct centering and leveling of the implements coupled to 4WT, 2WT and draft animal. Chapter 6 "Configuration of agricultural implements according to the topological arrangement" describes different types of arrangements used in basic crops such as corn and wheat, the configuration of the working bodies on the agricultural implements according to the selected topological arrangement and the configuration required to perform bed reforming and simultaneous fertilizer application with a single machine. Chapter 7 “Calibration in the dosing agricultural inputs” describes the transmission system and its respective components, the importance of traction in the distribution of agricultural inputs, different mechanisms for supplying traction, the process of controlling the working depth in relation to the soil and the process of calibrating metering systems for large and small seeds, fertilizers, and sprinklers. Finally, Chapter 8 "Risk prevention in the operation of agricultural machines" addresses the basic safety practices and recommendations to follow to prevent accidents and guarantee a safe work environment in mechanized agriculture, training in correct use of agricultural machinery, the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), prevention of rollovers, and preventive maintenance of machines.Item type | Current library | Collection | Call number | Status | Date due | Barcode | Item holds | |
