Summary: Since 1984 a series of road maintenance and rehabilitation projects have been implemented between Jogbani and Basantapur by the Department of Roads, HMG Nepal, with funding and technical assistance provided by the Overseas Development Administration UK, amaged by Roughton International. Under the guidance of the Transport Research Laboratory, UK, the projects have, since 1986, operated a Soil Conservation Section in order to experiment with and develop bio-engineering and bio-technical engineering works, to repair existing damage to roadside slopes, and to develop preventative slope maintenance techniques. This paper which includes 'as built' drawings and site information, is a record of 40 repaired and maintained slopes selected from more than a 100 sites that have been rehabilitated by the Soil Conservation Section. Details of costs, technical developments and the experience gained through this work are provided. The report is intended for engineers, foresters and agriculturalists who face similar problems of slope instability in other parts of Nepal and are looking at ways to repair damaged slopes. Visitors to the Eastern Region Road Maintenance Project can get a general overview of the works by referring to the drawings whilst on site. The paper illustrates the practical application of thecniques described in the manual Vegetation Structures for Stailiding Highway Slopes (Howell et al., 1991).
