The Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), populalry known as Pusa Institute, was originally established in 1905 at Pusa (Bihar) to initiate agricultural research in India. The institute was shifted to the present site in New Delhi following a major earthquake at Pusa and formally inaugarated on November 7th, 1936, by the then Viceroy of India, Marquis Linlithgo. Since 1966, the Institute es functioning under the administrative control of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), a central autonomous body.
