Restriction fragment lenght polymorphisms (RFLPs) are being used to survey tropical inbred maize germplasm developed at the International Center for Maize and Wheat Improvement (CIMMYT). The RFLPs revealed by more than 200 maize clones isolated and mapped at the University of Missouri provide an unprecedented body of information about the genomic diversity among 80 tropical inbreds of agronomic interest. We present a useful system for the analysis of RFLP data for comparative and systematic purposes as applied to CIMMYT's tropical inbred germplasm and discuss the possible relatioships of these materials to temperate germplasm.
