Climate change challenges plant breeding

By: Contributor(s): Material type: ArticleArticleLanguage: English Publication details: Elsevier Ltd, 2022. United Kingdom :ISSN:
  • 1369-5266
Subject(s): In: Current Opinion in Plant Biology v. 70, art. 102308Summary: Plant breeding is important to cope with climate change impacts, complementing crop management and policy interventions to ensure global food production. However, changes in environmental factors also affect the objectives, efficiency, and genetic gains of the current plant breeding system. In this review, we summarize the challenges prompted by climate change to breeding climate-resilient crops and the limitations of the next-generation breeding approach in addressing climate change. It is anticipated that the integration of multi-disciplines and technologies into three schemes of genotyping, phenotyping, and envirotyping will result in the delivery of climate change-ready crops in less time.
