Development of open-pollinated and hybrid varieties of maize for the hills of India

It is grown right from the lower hills to very high altitude, mainly during the rainy (kharif) season. Predominantly it is cultivated (> 90 per cent) as a rainfed crop while the irrigated crop is confined to valleys only. Maize research was initiated at VPKAS, Almora by its founder Director, late Prof. Boshi Sen in 1948 by introducing seeds of double cross hybrids. Initial work undertaken to develop full-season and medium maturing hybrids led to the release of the first maize double cross VL Makka 54 for the hills in 1962, evolved in 1955, prior to the inception of all India coordinated maize improvement project in 1957. It was followed by the release of another double cross hybrid Him 128 for the hills. During the subsequent period, intensification of breeding for earliness combining adequate tolerance against Helminthosporium turcicum resulted in the release of early maturing open-pollinated varieties, VL Makka 1, VL Makka 16 and VL Makka 41 for commercial cultivation in the Uttranchal hills, and VL Makka 88 for the Himalayan region. Genetic improvement for development of early hybrids has also met with great success as the institute has the distinction of releasing the first very-early double cross hybrid VL Makka 42 at national level for the hills and peninsular India. This hybrid has also been found to be extremely suitable for babycomcultivation across the country. Him 129 is yet another milestone achieved in hybrid breeding as it is the first ever very-early double top cross released for the rainfed maize belts of hills and central western India. Further, the institute has also shown remarkable performance in the field of single cross hybrid development not only for hills but also for several plain areas by successively releasing three cultivars viz., Vivek Hybrid 4 for central western India, Vivek Hybrid 5 for Uttaranchal and Vivek Maize Hybrid 9 for hills and Southern states. To make maize cultivation more remunerative, efforts during the seventies led to the development and release of an excellent popcorn synthetic, VL amber for the hills and a promising sweetcorn strain VL 15. Genetic enhancement for still higher yielding hybrids and open-pollinated varieties, vigorous and productive inbred parents to economize cost of F 1 seed and resistance/tolerance to H. turcicum are the thrust areas of research.Collection: CIMMYT Staff Publications Collection
