Wheat production is receiving serious attention by the government of Nigeria in an effort to be self-sufficient in food production. The Chad Basin Development Authority under the South Chad Irrigation Project (SCIP), the Soko Rima Basin Development Authority under the Bakolori Irrigation Project, and the Hadejia-Jama'are River Basin Development Authority under the Kano River Project (KRP) are, therefore, mandated to mainly emphasize wheat production. When fully developed the three schemes will irrigate a total of about 345,000 ha. About half of this area is currently planned to be put under wheat cultivation, remaining half will go into the production of vegetables, rice, maize, cotton and sugarcane.
