A method for identifying inbred lines containing dominant alleles affecting a quantitative trait, which are not already present in an elite single cross, was developed. If the elite single cross is designated P1 ✕ P2 and the lines to be tested Pw, the expression μG = [(P1 ✕ Pw) + (P2 ✕ Pw) − P1 − P2 − Pw − (P1 ✕ P2)]/4 is an estimate of the relative number of loci in Pw which contain favorable alleles not present in P1 or P2. Results from applying the method to a set of corn (Zea mays L.) grain yield data suggest the method may be useful in applied breeding programs.
