Pest management is an integral part of crop production activities, whether it is in a development or a developed part of the world, and whether it is in the context of a subsistence multi-component agricultural system or a cash-cropped monocultural system. Much has been written on the relationale for pest management, in particular on the concept on "Integrated Pest Management" (IPM) and on its applications. In many respects, IPM represents the basis for problem-solving in pest management, leading ultimately to increased benefits to the farmer, the consumer and society as a whole. There is however, another aspect of pest management -- the problem-definition aspect -- which has been receiving more attention by scientists and administrators alike, because of the realization that limited resources required a judicious use of inputs to address a well-defined problem. This problem-definition aspect of pest management contains a collection of methods which has come to be known as CROP LOSS ASSESSMENT. This book contains a collection of paper by different authors which deal with topics commonly included in crop loss assessment.
