A three year on-farm nitrogen rate and application timing trial was initiated in Kenya at three different locations with six sites during the main cropping season (April-October) of 1997. The main objective of the study was to establish the effect of nitrogen rate and application timing on the grain yield of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) under Kenyan small-scale farmers' circumstances. The study also looked at gender issues related to the transfer and adoption of production technology at the household level. Nitrogen rate and timing did not affect grain yield significantly at all sites except one. Nitrogen application timing was only advantageous with the highest rate of N (80 kg ha-1).
