This book is a comprehensive account of the evolution and impact of wheat research in Bangladesh, from the British imperial era to the present. Wheat -- a non traditional crop -- has now become a staple for many Bangladeshis and has assumed an important role in national food security. A summary of research on wheat breeding and crop management (including work on disease and insect pest problems), socioeconomic issues and farming systems issues is complemented by an account of the institutional structure for wheat research and government support services for wheat farmers in Bangladesh. Particular attention is given to the role of wheat in relation to rice production and research, given that rice remains the nation's most important staple food and that rice is frequently grown in rotation with wheat. The question of whether farmers will be able to sustain the productivity of their intensive rice-wheat production systems is examined as well. The book concludes with a review of the impacts of wheat research issues for the nation.
