Summary: The response of a number of field crops (small grains, potatoes and sugar-beet) to the AV of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium is described. For each combination of crop a nutrient element a generally applicable relation between economic yield and nutrient uptake can be described based on the minimum contents of the element in the principal crop organs, The wide variability in crop response to fertilizer application resulted mainly from widely varying relations between fertilizer application and nutrient uptake by the canopy. The application of this concept for the prediction of crop yield under nutrient limiting conditions is discussed
