Developing insect resistant germplasm using RFLP aided breeding techniques

Among the traits that ICI Seeds has mapped are those responsible for resistance to European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis Hubner, stalk tunneling, (ECB2). This information can be used to develop elite resistant germplasm. Families derived from a resistant x susceptible cross were utilized to map the chromosomal locations of the genes for resistance. The families of plants were screened against the specific insect damage, ECB2. leaf tissue was taken from the families for DNA extraction and RFLP characterization. Insect damage ratings were regressed against RFLP data to map gene locations and identify gene action. Using this molecular marker data concurrently with insect screening, the technique was successfully used to introduce ECB2 resistance into elite ICI Seeds inbreds.Collection: CIMMYT Publications Collection
