Winter wheat improvement using the shuttle breeding methodology between Toluca (Mexico) and Oregon (USA)

Very recently the application of this concept, that combines high yield with yield stability and broad resistance, has been further expanded to include winter wheat breeding, combining germplasm resources of both winter and spring wheat backgrounds. The progenies of the "spring x winter" crosses were alternately shuttled and selected at Toluca in Mexico (18 degrees N) and at Corvallis and Pendleton in the State of Oregon, VSA (45 degrees N). The resulting advanced lines are high and stable yielding, photoperiod insensitive, resistant to the three rusts, powdery mildew, and Septoria tritici, and have been shown to be widely adapted based on international trials in varying winter wheat environments in Asia and Latin America.|El mejoramiento sistematico para amplia adaptacion en trigos primaverales ha sido un logro significativo del CIMMYT. Recientemente, la aplicacion de este concepto, que combina alto rendimiento y estabilidad de rendimiento con amplia resistencia a factores limitantes, fue expandida al mejoramiento de trigos invernales utilizando recursos geneticos de trigos primaverales e invernales. Las progenies de cruzas de invierno x prima vera fueron seleccionados en generaciones alternadas en Toluca, Mexico (18 gradosN), y en Corvallis y Pendleton en el Estado de Oregon, Estados Unidos (45 gradosN). Las lineas avanzadas resultantes tienen alto y estable rendimiento, insensibilidad a fotoperiodo y resistencia alas tres royas. Oidio y septoriosis de la hoja. Estas lineas tambien han demostrado amplia adaptacion en ensayos internacionales en varios ambientes de trigos invernales en Asia y America Latina.Collection: CIMMYT Publications Collection
