FAO, in collaboration with the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) centers and other stakeholders, is assessing national plant breeding and related biotechnology capacity with the aim of raising awareness and evaluating opportunities for investment. Amongst the countries in other parts of the world, four Central Asian countries were surveyed. This paper describes the survey mechanism used by FAO, presents report on preliminary information gathered on four Central Asian countries and summaries the recommendations made by an expert group which reviewed the preliminary information with giving a meaning to the potential of the available information for planning breeding strategies.
