Breeding for barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) genotypes tolerant or resistant to barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) was started in Italy in 1982. Two resistant lines from the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) were crossed with four high yielding winter six-row susceptible cultivars. Field observations in segregating populations indicate that selection considering plant height and grains/spike could be efficient for improving specific resistance in winter barley.
