Minitractors have been introduced into the relatively sparsely populated province of South Sulawesi to provide additional land preparation power. To better understand the impact of this program, 50 individuals in Sidrap and Pinrang Districts were interviewed. Ten of them bought minitractors in 1975-79. Information about socio economic characteristics and various aspects of tractor operations was collected. Analysis showed that tractor ownership was not economically viable because of breakdowns and a shorter than expected useful life. Utilization of new tractors during the first year has declined each year since 1975. This suggests that increases
