In: Genetica Agraria (Italy). (1984). v. 38(3) p. 267-302Summary: Reduction in grain yield summarizes the effects of lack of water (drought stress) on the maize (Zea mays L.) crop. Morphological and physiological characteristics affected by drought stress and their relationships in maize are reviewed. Screening techniques mainly utilized for selecting genetic material able to avoid or tolerate drought are discussed. The characteristics of maize plant associated with drought tolerance are complex, being controlled by several genes and influenced by environment. Improving of existing breeding material utilizing the genetic variability available in the genotypes evolved under drought environment can be possible by breeding programs
