A description is given of a disease in wheat (Triticum aestivum L. and Triticum durum L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), that was widespread in these crops in Emilia Romagna and Lombardy (Northern Italy) in 1995-96. The disease was attributed to wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV) infection, on the basis of immunoelectron microscopy (ISEM) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The wide distribution of the virus disease was correlated with the weather pattern in the summer of 1995, that was particularly rainy, favouring the growth of wild graminaceae and thus the development of the eriophid mite Aceria tosichella Keifer, the virus vector
