The soil-washing technique is discussed in relation to its efficiency in removing fungal spores from soil samples and to its application for studying soil microhabitats. Detailed data on the application of the technique to a range of soils are given, and an attempt is made to evaluate the potentialities of the technique for studies on soil fungi.
