The studies were undertaken to find high yielding cross combinations amongst the inbreds of diverse background. Four U S and two tropical inbreds were crossed in a diallel fashion. F1s, reciprocals and parents were studied in a simple lattice design and analysed for general (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) effects. It was revealed that inbreds MO 17 and A619 (U S origin) and TZI7103 (tropical origin) showed good GCA whereas W64A, a poor general combiner gave good results in a specific cross combination with another poor general combiner TZI4001. Similarly, cross combinations involving inbreds of diverse origin (B73 x TZI7103 and A619 x TZI4001) were obtained whose behaviour was not specified. The variance due to SCA was greater in magnitude showing that major portion of genetic variance was due to dominant or epistatic gene effects. This situation reveals the importance of non-additive type of gene action
