Laboratory tests with carbofuran and disulfoton applied to seeds of wheat cvs. Abe (susceptible to barley yellow dwarf virus) and Caldwell (tolerant), and oat cvs. Clintland 64 (susceptible) and Porter (tolerant), showed that mortality of the bird cherry oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.), increased with dosage, with differences between cultivars. No additive effects were found between tolerance to the virus and insecticidal action at low dosages. Dosages of 1,000 ml (AI)/100 kg seed protected the plants from aphids for 2-4 wk. Longer residual effects were obtained in wheat than in oats
