Effects of sodium chloride, propionic acid and ammonium hydroxide on growth of Aspergillus flavus on corn and Aflatoxin production

Sodium chloride at concentrations of 40 and 80 mg/g could inhibit only aflatoxin production while 120 mg/g of sodium chloride inhibited both growth and aflatoxin production of A. flavus in corn after 7 and 14 days of incubation. The additional propionic acid to the corn at concentrations of 500, 1000 and 1500 ug/g enhanced the production aflatoxin whereas 2000 and 2500 ug/g of propionic acid inhibited the formation of aflatoxin.
