In: Journal of Genetics and Breeding v. 46, no. 2, p. 125-13293-095276Summary: Modified wheat plants with 42 chromosomes were produced through crossing hexaploid wheat with salt tolerant accessions of Ae. cylindrica. F1 hybrids with 35 chromosomes were backcrossed with recurrent wheat parent. Only 42 chromosomes BC1 plants were selfed twice to produce BC1 self fertile derivatives. These derivatives were then tested for salt tolerance. Screening was conducted by germinating the seeds on filter papers moistened with saline solutions of EC 3 (control), 15, 20 and 25 dS/m and by growing two-weeks old seedlings in gravel tanks maintained at the above salinity levels by a step-wise increase in electrical conductivity.
