The present review concerns the production of doubled-haploid barley for plant breeding purposes. Some preliminary considerations about terminology suggest to restrict the terms "haploid" and "dihaploid" to individuals with the chromosomal constitution of their haplophase and diplophase, respectively. The number of genomes present should be referred separately and its integrity (or otherwise) should be referred by the traditional prefixes in the designation of the ploidy state; for instance, the genomic constitution of an individual with sporophytic composition equivalent to its haplophase, with two complete genomes, will be
