We estimated the viability of 20 wheat seed samples without embryo excision. After soaking in water the seeds were immersed in tetrazolium solution and treated by ultrasound frequency 22 kHz, intensity 0.69 W/cm('2) for from five to 10 minutes. The ultrasound treatment promoted penetration into imbibed seeds. After 24 hours staining at 20 deg C the seeds were boiled in lactophenol to clear the second coat. The viability of embryos was evaluated through the seed coat, without separation of the embryo
