A brief review is given of the increasing international recognition and scientific study in recent years of the potential for integrated systems of forest and agricultural species. Many of these systems have already long been used in traditional societies. Forestry's role in development is illustrated by reference to: multiple use tree species; the shift in emphasis from timber tree monocultures to ecologically more stable mixtures; and the benefits of integrated systems for better sites as well as marginal lands.
