Mixtures of multi-row winter barley cultivars were compared with pure standsin trials carried out over 2 yr at 2 locations in the GFR. Effects of mixtures (i.e., differences between measured values in mixed stands and av. values for the individual cultivars in pure stands) on leaf diseases and grain yield were quantified. Three-cv. mixtures exhibited a significant (p<0.05) reduction in incidence of Erysiphe graminis, related to a significant yield increase; 2-cv. mixtures showed a similar tendency. Similar effects were found with Rhynchosporium secalis and Pyrenophora teres. Reduction in leaf diseases by cv. mixtures was less than with fungicide treatment.
