Response of maize and soya beans grown in monoculture and in association

Davis, Gaysoy, Gedult, Hardee and Improved Pelican were grown in monoculture and association. Av. LAI for the 5 soyabean cv. grown in monoculture was 2.78 whilst that for soyabeans in the mixed stand was 1.54. LAI for maize was similar in both stand types. Soyabean yield in monoculture was twice that in mixed stands. Cropping system affected the number of branches/m2, pods/m2 and seed yield of soyabeans. When planted in associationwith soyabeans no effect on maize LAI, DM yield or seed yield was detected.
