Comparative studies of weed competition in sugar beet

By: Contributor(s): Material type: ArticleArticleLanguage: En Publication details: 1986Subject(s): In: Aspects of Applied Biology no. 13, p. 11-16609903Summary: Three pot experiments were conducted under greenhouse conditions to evaluatethe growth, physiology and yield of sugarbeet in relation to Avena fatua competition. The comparative competitiveness to sugarbeet of A. fatua, Alopecurus myosuroides and Stellaria media was also studied. A. fatua competition caused significant loss in the growth, leaf chlorophyll content and yield of sugarbeet. In general, time of A. fatua emergence and plant density were both important factors in determining the severity of crop yield loss. The order of competitiveness seemed to be A. fatua > A. myosuroides > S. media. However, at higher densities no significant causal
