A study to assess the productivity of maize (Zea mays L.) and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.) in solecropping and intercropping systems under irrigation was done at Chisumbanje Experiment Station in the summer rainy season of 1994/95 season. Cowpea at five plant population densities of 90000, 50000, 60000, 40000 and 30000 plants/ha was intercropped with maize at the standard population of 44 000 plants/ha. The control treatments were solecropping maize and solecropping cowpea at 44000 and 90000 plants/ha respectively. Grain yield of maize in solecropping was 40% greater than that from intercropping. Grain yield of cowpea from solecropping was 135% greater than that from intercropping. The best intercropping treatment was at the 50000 plants/ha plant population of cowpea. This treatment had the highest total land equivalent ratio which was 25% greater than that from solecropping, and a total monetary value which was second best from that of solecropping maize. This study will be continued for another four years before final conclusions are made. |
