520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Intercropping of maize with pigeon pea is a widely documented and acceptable cropping system. Nevertheless, the suitable maize varieties and the optimum maize plant population for that cropping system in the Northern Zone of Tanzania is still poorly understood. A field experiment was conducted at Selian in a split plot design, where 3 maize varieties were compared at 2 N levels and 2 plant populations. Maize grain yields were significantly increased at the higher plant population and with N application. The higher plant population of maize significantly reduced the grain yield of pigeon pea from 0.8 to 0.5 t/ha. TMV 1, followed by Kito, resisted maize streak and cob diseases more than CG 4141 in the maize/pigeon pea intercropping system. Economically, intercropping TMV 1 with N application pays more than with the other 2 varieties. Also, growing 44,444 maize plants/ha is more profitable than 22,222 plants /ha. In conclusion, open pollinated maize varieties at higher maize plant population densities are more profitable for maize/pigeon pea intercropping than the CG 4141 hybrid tested.
