Summary, etc. The pleiotropic gene Lr46/Yr29/Pm39/Ltn2 confers slow rusting adult plant resistance (APR) to leaf rust (Puccinia triticina), yellow rust (P. striiformis tritici) and powdery mildew (Blumeria graminis tritici), respectively and is associated with leaf tip necrosis of adult plants. Recent mapping of APR to stem rust indicated the possibility that this gene may also confer APR to stem rust. To confirm it, we compared the disease development of two γ-irradiation induced deletion mutants developed from the original line carrying Lr46 ?Lalbahadur(Pavon1B)?. The original line and two mutants (GID5349716 and GID5349718) were evaluated thrice at weekly intervals for stem rust responses in field trials conducted for three crop seasons (2010-2011, 2011-2012 and 2012-13) under artificial epidemics with Mexican P. graminis tritici race RTR. Lalbahadur(Pavon1B) and the mutants showed moderately susceptible to susceptible infection response, i.e. no hypersensitivity was observed around the pustules, however Lalbahadur(Pavon1B) had significantly lower mean final stem rust severity of about 10% compared to 50% for the mutants, on the average, across seasons. Our results provide conclusive evidence that pleiotropic gene Lr46/Yr29/Pm39/Ltn2 also confers APR to stem rust and can be utilized to provide long term protection to multiple pathogens in combination with other minor, APR genes.
