The Chinese wheat cultivar Sumai 3 is well known for its Fusarium head blight (FHB) resistance and its QTL located on chromosome 3BS (Fhb1), 5AS (Fhb5) and 6BS (Fhb2) have been widely utilized. But it is unwise to rely exclusively on this resistance source and thus identification and utilization of new resistance sources are important. Some of the synthetic hexaploid wheat lines made in CIMMYT have shown good FHB resistance, based on which mapping populations were generated to characterize their resistance. A RIL population of 131 lines and a DH population of 102 lines are used in this study, and the resistant parents are derived from the same synthetic line SABUF/5/BCN/4/RABI//GS/CRA/3/AE.SQUARROSA (190). Haplotyping confirmed the absence of Sumai 3 QTL in this source. The RILs were tested in Ås (Norway), Nanjing (China) and El Batan (Mexico) in 2011, while the DH population was only tested in El Batan in 2010 and 2011. The variables evaluated were FHB severity and incidence at 20, 25 and 30 days after inoculation, DON concentration, Fusarium Damaged Kernels (%FDK), Plant height (PH), Days to heading (DH) and several morphological traits, e.g. Anther extrusion (AE) and Tenacious glume (TG). Both the two populations exhibited a wide range for the FHB parameters. Preliminary results showed significant correlations among FHB index (Severity x Incidence), AUDPC (area under the disease progress curve) and DON, in both populations; but none of them was found to be significantly correlated with FDK. PH and DH also showed strong correlations with FHB in most environments, while strong association of AE and TG with FHB was found in the DH and the RIL population, respectively. The field evaluation will be repeated in 2012, and then phenotypic data of at least three environments will be available for the two populations, which, together with the forthcoming genotypic data, will be used for QTL mapping. |
