520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. A cursory survey conducted in 2006 indicated the likely presence of Pgt races carrying Sr31- virulence in the Ngorongoro highlands of Northern Tanzania. In a follow-up survey in 2009, the presence of Ug99-related races was confirmed. Through race identification work conducted in the USA, races TTKSK (syn. Ug99), TTKST (Sr31 + Sr24 virulence) and TTTSK (Sr31 + Sr36 virulence) were positively identified in samples from the four main wheat-growing regions, viz. Arusha, Manyara, Mbeya (the southern highlands), and the Ngorongoro highlands. This first reported detection of wheat stem rust race Ug99 and its variants in Tanzania helps fill a gap in the historical record documenting the likely migration of these races from eastern to southern Africa and also indicates a need for expanding the geographic range of ongoing systematic surveillance of wheat stem rust in the region.
